Windsor is pleased to announce Dr. Johnson Hagood as its Official Commemorative Poster Artist for the 2022 Windsor Charity Polo Cup.

An accomplished artist, Dr. Hagood paints with oils and acrylics in a vibrant color palette using both brush and palette knife. He is self-taught, having painted with oils since childhood. With a steady hand and artistic talent, it is no surprise that Dr. Hagood is also a highly skilled restorative and cosmetic dentist with a thriving practice in Vero Beach.

Painting in a distinctive impressionistic style, Hagood’s subjects include serene natural landscapes, still life, to high energy works depicting polo ponies in action. His paintings have a sense of timelessness in nature, as if he has captured the very moment nature has reached the pinnacle of its beauty.

Hagood says his style is influenced by some of the acclaimed impressionist artists such as Matisse, Barnard and Monet. Most recently, he has been inspired by the contemporary works of French artist Jean Claude Roy and Dutch artist Frits Van Eeden, implementing more abstract applications to some of his latest works. Dr. Hagood’s work can be found on display at the Artists Guild Gallery in Vero Beach’s Historic Downtown Arts District.

“Over the last few years, I have become very interested in painting scenes from the thrilling sport of polo and particularly the Windsor Charity Polo Cup,” Dr. Hagood stated. “The featured painting was inspired by several of the photos television personality John Walsh – who has been involved in the event since its inception – provided me. I feel truly blessed to play a part in the 2022 Polo Cup.”

Titled The Match, the 30” x 30” acrylic painting captures the excitement and intensity of the sport of polo. The piece will be auctioned off at the charity event luncheon, with silent bids beginning at the Players Cocktail Reception on Friday, February 18, 2022, the evening before the polo match.

A native of North Carolina, Dr. Hagood earned a B.S. degree in Biology from East Carolina University and a Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. His professional achievements are numerous, making him one of the highest credentialed dentists in the United States.

“Dr. Hagood has been a supporter of the Windsor Charity Polo Cup for many years,” said Jane Smalley, Marketing Director for Windsor. “We were thrilled when he offered to donate this beautiful work inspired by our biennial polo match and expect it to be a very popular auction item.”

Dr. Hagood will attend the February event and be on hand to sign posters. He will also hold a pop-up gallery in the event’s Specialty Retail Village showcasing a selection of his works available for purchase. A percentage of all sales will also go to the event’s charities.

Co-chaired by the Hon. Hilary M. Weston and Salvatore Ferragamo, the Windsor Charity Polo Cup is recognized as the premier high-goal charity polo match of the Vero Beach season. Taking place on Saturday, February 19, 2022, on Windsor’s polo grounds, the event will feature a roster of top-level international players. Funds raised will benefit two local environmentally focused charities. Net proceeds will be divided equally between the Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA) and the Environmental Learning Center (ELC).

The Windsor Charitable Foundation board is pleased to announce the return of PNC Bank as the presenting sponsor for the 2022 Windsor Charity Polo Cup. Additionally, the Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA) and the Environmental Learning Center (ELC) have been selected as the event’s two benefitting charities. The 2020 Charity Polo Cup raised $333,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County, the Literacy Services of Indian River County, and the Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County local community charities – the highest amount of charitable dollars in the event’s history.

“The Foundation’s goal for the biennial polo event is to give back to our local community. For the 2022 event, we selected two environmentally focused organizations to support, which are doing exceptional work in the areas of protecting critical habitats, research and education,” said Betsy Hanley, president of Windsor and vice chair of the Foundation board.

Both charities selected this year have several Windsor Members as supporters and donors. Event beneficiaries play an active role in the success of the event and serve on the event planning committee.

“ORCA is incredibly grateful to be named a beneficiary of the 2022 Windsor Charity Polo Cup. This support comes at a critical time for our organization and for the Indian River Lagoon,” said Dr. Edie Widder, ORCA president, CEO and senior scientist.

“All of us at the Environmental Learning Center are thrilled to have been chosen as a co-beneficiary of the Windsor Polo event this February,” added Barbara Schlitt Ford, the organization’s executive director. “Windsor is a premier, internationally known residential enclave and we are so proud to be working with these special neighbors. Galen passed away peacefully at home on April 12, 2021, at the age of 80, after a long illness faced with courage and dignity.

Beloved husband to The Hon. Hilary Weston; dearest father to Galen G. (Alexandra) and Alannah (Alexander Cochrane); devoted grandfather to Maia, Lola, Graydon, and Griffin. Survived by his siblings, Grainger, Nancy Baron, Wendy Rebanks (Leslie), Gretchen Bauta (Humberto), Camilla Dalglish (Peter), their families and his stepmother Margaret. Predeceased by his parents Garfield and Reta Weston, his brother Garry Weston, and his sisters Miriam Burnett and Barbara Mitchell.

Born at Marlow, Buckinghamshire, UK, on October 29, 1940, the youngest of nine children, Galen studied business administration at Huron University College at the University of Western Ontario. In 1961 he launched his career by acquiring and expanding supermarkets and department stores in Ireland. In 1972 he returned to Canada to take charge of Loblaw, a struggling chain of grocery stores that George Weston Limited had controlled since 1947. Over more than four decades of hard work and team effort, Galen led the transformation of Loblaw from near-bankruptcy to what is now Canada’s leading retailer, including the creation of President’s Choice, the launch of PC Financial, and the acquisition of Shoppers Drug Mart.

Concurrently, Galen brought his vision, imagination, and energy to creating Selfridges Group, a collection of iconic department stores, through the acquisition of Brown Thomas and Arnotts in Ireland, Holt Renfrew and Ogilvy in Canada, Selfridges in the UK, and de Bijenkorf in the Netherlands.

He had a keen eye for real estate, creating Canada’s leading real estate investment trust, Choice Properties, as well as transforming the Oxford Street neighbourhood surrounding Selfridges’s London store.

Galen’s success in business was rooted in his values as a person. With a sense of duty to build upon the legacy of his father and grandfather as entrepreneurs and community leaders, he believed strongly that business was about more than the bottom line. The pleasure he took from getting to know individuals from all walks of life reflected his conviction that people are the foundation of any successful enterprise. And, with infectious optimism and insatiable curiosity, his greatest gift was his ability to inspire others to achieve more than they thought possible.

Amid his endless enthusiasm for business, Galen always made time for his other passions. Among them, a lifelong commitment to philanthropy through the Weston Family Foundation, and the time spent with family and good friends who were so central to his life.

He will be sorely missed by Hilary. Through 55 years of a deeply loving marriage, they worked as a team in the expansion of the luxury department stores and the development of Windsor, an acclaimed residential community in Florida. They were especially proud of her five years of public service as Ontario’s 26th lieutenant governor. But nothing gave them more gratification than their two children, both of whom have risen so commendably to the challenges Galen passed on to them after his retirement in 2016.

The family would like to extend their thanks to Pavi Binning, to Dr. Zubina Mawji, Dr. Sandra Black and Dr. Dermot O’Flynn, to nurses Patriz Lopez and Louise Gregoire, to caregiver Sultanah Khan and to Marianne Surmann. They also wish to recognize the many other dedicated individuals who supported Galen at home.

A celebration of Galen’s life will be held in Toronto at a later date.

The Gallery at Windsor, an independent art space within Vero Beach’s private Windsor luxury residential community, presents an exclusive exhibit of works by monumental artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude from The Weston Collection.

Throughout their lives, Christo Vladimirov Javacheff and his wife and artistic partner, Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon, created a series of large-scale environmental artworks in urban and rural sites worldwide. The couple’s projects heralded the first wave of installation art, a practice that extends to the present and predominates much of contemporary artmaking. Notable, internationally renowned projects include Wrapped Reichstag, Berlin; Valley Curtain, Rifle, Colorado; The Pont Neuf Wrapped, Paris and Surrounded Islands, Biscayne Bay, Miami.

About two dozen works depicting projects created between the 1960s and 1990s are now on display in The Gallery at Windsor, which is a small portion of the private collection of W. Galen and Hilary Weston, founders of the Windsor community.

“Large in scale, the works of Christo and Jeanne-Claude often involved the collaboration of so many people making them far from private, yet they were often so personal,” said Jonathan Henery, studio manager and the artists’ nephew. “This exhibit at Windsor is intended to create a new relationship with contemporary art and challenge the perception of the locations in each piece. These works will outlive us, as does art in general, and pay tribute to both Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s legacy.”

Showcased among the preparatory drawings and collages on display in The Gallery at Windsor are recognized projects of Christo and Jeanne-Claude including The Umbrellas, Japan, and U.S.A.; Wrapped Trees, Riehen, Switzerland; Surrounded Islands, Biscayne Bay, Florida; Valley Curtain, Rifle, Colorado; and The Gates, Central Park, New York. The selection also includes a number of works depicting the artists’ unrealized projects and photographs of completed works in situ, dating from the 1960s to late 1990s.

Christo passed away in May 2020. Jeanne-Claude preceded him in death in 2009. Christo once stated that the purpose of their artworks – visually impressive and often controversial due to their scale – was to create joy and beauty and encourage new ways of seeing familiar landscapes.

The exhibition will be on display for Windsor members only at The Gallery until April 30, 2021. For more information visit windsorflorida.com.

    About the Artists
Christo, who was born in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, and Jeanne-Claude, originally from Morocco of a French military family, seemed destined to live and create together, as they were born on the same day in 1935. Christo studied art in Sofia, Bulgaria, and in Prague. Jeanne-Claude studied Latin and philosophy in Tunis. They met in Paris in 1958 and went on to create an impressive body of monumental, deliberately temporary works together. Jeanne-Claude died, aged 74, on November 18, 2009. Until his own recent death on May 31, 2020, at age 84, Christo continued to work under both the artists’ names. Throughout their 51-year relationship, they paid all expenses associated with their artworks, including planning, construction, and de-construction, entirely from the sale of Christo’s preliminary drawings, early works from the 1950s and 1960s and lithographs. They accepted no contributions, grants or other financial assistance, preferring to make their decisions separate from any potential influence of financial backers. Their works involved years of planning, meetings and hearings held by governments and communities for approval of their projects. The artists’ works are held in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Musée d’art modern et d’art contemporain in Nice, and the Cleveland Museum of Art, among others.

Román Ortega-Cowan, Artistic Director of Vero Beach Opera, introduced the artists.

Performed ballads included songs from Broadway hits such as West Side Story and Les Misérables, and operatic arias from Carmen, La Bohème, and Rigoletto. Other spectators enjoyed picnicking in the field-side tailgating area or viewed the match from grandstand seating. Television’s John Walsh, host of ID’s In Pursuit with John Walsh and a regular supporter of the biennial event, served as the luncheon’s Emcee.

“As many of you know, Galen and I founded Windsor, our ‘village by the sea,’ 31 years ago, with polo and equestrian pursuits at the very heart of our community,” said The Hon. Hilary M. Weston during her welcome remarks. “I hope all of you agree that Vero Beach is a very special place – volunteerism is alive and well here – and it is an honor to co-chair this wonderful event,” she added to a rousing applause from the guests at the luncheon.

Also part of the luncheon was a charity raffle featuring an array of extravagant prizes donated by participating sponsors. From expensive wines donated by Bryant Estate and Il Borro to international travel packages, jewelry gifts and more, raffle winners took home exciting prizes. One lucky winner took away the featured prize, a beautiful Paul Morelli 18K yellow gold equestrian necklace, valued at $16,000, donated by the event’s Luxury Jeweler Co-Sponsors, Belle Cose and Paul Morelli.

Located near the luncheon tent, the buzzing Specialty Retail Village featured a curated selection of pop-up boutiques with products available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the benefitting charities. Luxury retailers included high-end clothing from Ala von Auersperg, J. McLaughlin and Stick & Ball, to name a few; jewelry from Paul Morelli and Tamara Comolli; equestrian artwork from featured artist Carrie Nygren; and more. At the center of the Specialty Retail Village was the Chateau d’Esclans Whispering Angel pop-up bar, a popular addition to the shopping experience.

Proceeds from the 2020 Windsor Charity Polo Cup will be donated to the three benefitting charities this year, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County, the Literacy Services of Indian River County and the Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County in support of their respective causes. While totals are still being tallied, Windsor anticipates this to be one of the most successful fundraising efforts in the event’s history.

The 2020 Windsor Charity Polo Cup was supported by both national and local sponsors. Luxury brand and corporate sponsors include PNC Bank, Torwest, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Audi of Melbourne, CBRE, Laurent-Perrier, Chateau d’Esclans, Casa Dragones, Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice Co., Sysco, Town & Country magazine and Vero Beach magazine, among others.

This past weekend, Windsor co-founder and Creative Director for The Gallery at Windsor, the Hon. Hilary M. Weston hosted an exclusive weekend to celebrate the opening of Let it Settle, an exhibition by the leading British artist Rose Wylie RA at The Gallery at Windsor, Vero Beach, Florida. The exhibition, which runs until 30 April 2020, is the third annual exhibition at Windsor presented in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Arts in London as part of a three-year curatorial partnership launched in 2018 and the first exhibition in the programme by a female artist. Drawn from today’s pop culture, Wylie’s exuberant compositions now have a special and celebrated place at The Gallery at Windsor.

The weekend’s guest list featured leading members of the international art world, including Mr. Tim Marlow, former Artistic Director of the Royal Academy and the newly appointed Chief Executive and Director of London’s Design Museum; Mr. Christopher Le Brun, celebrated British artist and President of the Royal Academy of Arts from 2011 to December 2019; Jari-Juhani Lager, Owner-Director of the Union and Choi-Lager galleries, co-curator and agent of Rose Wylie; and Ms. Melissa Blanchflower, Curator of Exhibitions and Public Art at Serpentine Galleries in London.  Also in attendance was Windsor President Mrs. Betsy Hanley; Mr. Brett Sherlock, International Consultant at Christie’s and Board Member of Gardiner Museum; Mr. Brady Roberts, Executive Director and CEO of the Vero Beach Museum of Art; and Mrs. Stephanie Ingrassia, Windsor Member and Vice-Chairwoman of the Board at the Brooklyn Museum.

The artist was unable to attend the special evening, but was represented by her two children, Luke and Henrietta Oxlade.  A short, colourful video of Tim Marlow in conversation with the artist was played at the opening of a panel discussion led by Tim Marlow, with expert commentary by Jari-Juhani Lager and Melissa Blanchflower. The conversation was followed by a celebratory dinner hosted by Mrs. Weston at the Weston Guest House.

The exhibition at Windsor presents a group of paintings and drawings that reflect the artist’s interest in popular culture, deftly merging political, social, and autobiographical elements. It includes subjects as diverse as the historic British monarchy and the imaginary character Snow White, memorial crests and castles. This show provides an important opportunity to showcase the artist’s work in the United States, introducing her unique style to a wide audience.

The exhibition was curated by the artist’s long-time collaborator Jari-Juhani Lager and Rodolphe von Hofmannsthal, Senior Director at David Zwirner. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated book published by Windsor Press and Royal Academy Enterprises, including an interview with Tim Marlow, a foreword by The Hon. Hilary M. Weston, a letter by Christopher Le Brun and an essay by actor and contemporary art collector Russell Tovey.

The Royal Academy of Arts is an independent institution led by eminent artists and architects; its purpose is to promote the creation, enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts through exhibitions, education and debate. The three-year curatorial collaboration with The Gallery at Windsor has included exhibitions by the celebrated Royal Academicians, Grayson Perry in 2018 and Sir Michael Craig-Martin in 2019.
